How often should you do a brake service?

Mark Kennedy • May 26, 2021

Brakes need to be inspected regularly and serviced when required, such as when some parts show signs of sticking or seizing up or when rust or dirt buildup causes brake noises. Some carmakers include brake service into the maintenance schedule, while others specify that brakes need to be inspected at regular mileage or time intervals, typically every 5,000 to 7,000 miles or every 4 to 6 months, whichever comes first. Brakes should also be inspected and serviced (or replaced) if they are not working correctly, squeaking, grinding, or producing other abnormal noises, or if the brake pedal does not feel "right."

How often should brakes be replaced?

Mileage guidelines for brake pad replacement will vary depending on the manufacturer. However, the consensus is that you should get your pads replaced somewhere between 30,000 to 35,000 miles. If the brakes look worn out or lose performance, you should have them replaced. If any unusual noises or sparks are coming from the brakes, have them inspected by a mechanic right away. Good, functional brakes are key to safe, predictable braking and safe motoring!
